The Nevada Trout in the Classroom is a hands-on conservation education program that brings trout eggs into classrooms across the state. Students raise trout in classroom aquariums, learn about watershed ecology and aquatic habitats, and participate in supervised release-day activities in local rivers and streams.
The statewide program is organized by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
Trout Adventures collaborates with NDOW to support Trout in the Classroom in rural communities in the Western Region.
The Nevada Trout in the Classroom program — including registration, equipment provisioning, and the Teacher Guide — is managed by NDOW.
Teachers interested in participating must register directly with NDOW and follow all program guidelines.

Trout Adventures does not replace these resources. We work alongside NDOW and other partners to support local classrooms.
Once registered with NDOW, teachers in our service area may receive additional support from Trout Adventures.
Our primary service area includes Douglas County and select neighboring rural communities in Lyon County and Alpine County, California.
Teachers in our service area are welcome to contact us for assistance at any stage of the program. Contact us at Info@TroutAdventures.org.
Trout Adventures provides practical, on-the-ground assistance, including:
Aquarium setup and maintenance, including water quality troubleshooting
Egg delivery coordination,
Supplemental lessons on trout biology and watershed science
Release-day coordination and educational activities.
We are happy to conduct Q&A sessions with students throughout the program. We can also time classroom visits to minimize disruptions and support teachers’ schedules.
In the Carson River watershed, we collaborate with River Wranglers.
In the Walker River basin, we work with Walker Basin Conservancy.
In Alpine County, we partner with the Alpine Watershed Group.
Our goal is simple: to help teachers run a smooth, meaningful program consistent with NDOW guidelines.
Trout eggs are delivered to participating classrooms (through NDOW).
Students monitor tank conditions and observe trout development.
Lessons integrate ecology, life cycles, and conservation principles.
Students participate in a supervised release day at a local waterway.
The program aligns with Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), primarily at the 4th and 5th grades. Teachers can adapt the program to other grades.
While rooted in life science and conservation, the program also supports cross-curricular learning — including social studies connections to Nevada’s natural heritage and the role of native fish in our state’s history and outdoor traditions.
Trout in the Classroom gives students:
Direct experience with life science
A connection to local watersheds
An understanding of habitat stewardship
A meaningful outdoor learning experience
In rural communities, these hands-on conservation opportunities are especially valuable.
