Char

Char (Salvelinus) are a genus of circum-arctic salmonids. Several char species are commonly called trout, including bull trout, brook trout, and lake trout.

Char species native to the western states include:

• Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus),

• Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus),

• Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), and

• Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush).

Brook trout, while introduced in across the western states, are native to northeastern United States and eastern Canada.
