Char (Salvelinus) are a genus of circum-arctic salmonids. Several char species are commonly called trout, including bull trout, brook trout, and lake trout.
Char species native to the western states include:
Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus),
Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus),
Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), and
Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush).
Brook trout, while introduced in across the western states, are native to northeastern United States and eastern Canada.
